Ischia is a volcanic island off the west coast of Italy, that offers a unique blend of natural beauty and cultural richness. Known for its lush landscapes, thermal spas, and picturesque beaches, Ischia is a gem in Italy's Mediterranean crown. From exploring its rugged coastline and verdant hills to soaking in its rejuvenating hot springs, this island provides a multifaceted experience for travellers seeking both relaxation and adventure.

The neighbouring island, Capri, has long been a tourist favourite, but Ischia is still somewhat of a hidden gem and less commercialised than Capri.

We travelled to Ischia via ferry from Naples. The trip itself was fine, but finding the right ferry in Naples was a nightmare! We ended up missing our (pre-paid) ferry and had to pay for new tickets for the next one. Moral of the story: give yourself plenty of time to navigate the chaotic ferry terminal in Naples.

We finally arrived at Porto D'Ischia, which felt like stepping into a vibrant, picturesque scene straight out of a postcard. The bustling harbour is lined with colourful buildings, quaint shops, and lively cafes, creating an inviting atmosphere right from the moment you step off the ferry.

Up the top of a very steep hill we found our hotel - Hotel Le Querce. The view from the hotel was extraordinary, with stunning views of the surrounding hills and the azure waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Hotel Le Querce is a great four star hotel close to the port, with a large pool, a bar and a restaurant. We were upgraded to a great room with a large balcony.

If you feel like a dip in the ocean, you can take the winding steps down to the jetty.

We wanted to explore Ischia so we didn't have dinner at the hotel. Instead we wandered around the local area and came across a restaurant called Il Giardino. They had the most beautiful garden setting and the food was great, we had antipasti, pizza and delicious wine, and we rolled out of the restaurant.

If you're looking for a refreshing alternative to the well-trodden paths of Capri, Ischia is a destination worth exploring. This charming island offers a blend of natural beauty, rich history, and a more relaxed vibe compared to its glamorous neighbour. With its thermal springs, lush landscapes, and authentic Italian cuisine, Ischia provides a unique and rewarding experience. Whether you're soaking in the healing waters, wandering through its historic villages, or savouring local delicacies, Ischia presents a distinctive and enriching escape that’s well worth adding to your travel itinerary.

We can't wait to return and explore more of the island.
